Measles Outbreak

To make everyone aware, Birmingham is currently experiencing an outbreak of Measles. To date there haveut been 18 confirmed cases. 16 of these have been within the Roma community; B8, B9 and B10 predominantly. There are, however, indications that the virus is moving into the local population.

London, Manchester, Leeds and Bristol are also currently suffering from outbreaks, so it is of the utmost importance that you are vigilant for signs and symptoms, and also that you encourage your children to get their MMR vaccine. These are routinely given at 13 months and 3.5 years, but if children have missed their doses, they can make an appointment with the GP and get the vaccine immediately. Some parents do have reservations, but giving this vaccine to healthy, well children aids in preventing the spread of the disease within the community to those who are most vulnerable and cannot receive the vaccine.

Next week will see two Community Clinics set up; one at the Omnia Practice, in B9, and one at Washwood Heath Medical Centre, in B8. Whilst we understand settings are hectic right now with the Festive Season, it’s imperative that everyone does their part in looking out for, and ending this outbreak.

To help with this, we have two information cards that can be used: one in English and one in Romanian. Please feel free to post these in the entrances for your settings, to keep parents in the loop about what to look for.
